You don’t need a PHD to notice the diversity in Ancient Egypt.
For the past two days I've been reading articles and watching YouTube videos of afrocentrists or “Hoteps” stating that Europeans used Egyptology to rob "their" tombs and artifacts, that Europeans “white washed“ the Ancient Egyptians. Saying Ancient Egyptians called Egypt KEMET (black land).
Sorry to burst your bubble, but Ancient Egyptians were not ”white” nor were they “black” , they were EGYPTIANS... (deal with it.)
Skin color varied from Lower Egypt, Upper Egypt, and Nubia, who in various eras rose to power in Ancient Egypt. Moreover, The ancient population of Egypt has never been extinguished nor replaced, but is in fact ancestral to most of the modern population of Egypt. You don’t have to be a genius to see that Ancient Egyptians looked very much like modern Egyptians. Within Egyptian history, despite multiple foreign invasions, the demographics were not shifted, in fact most invasions were military invasions not migrations.
On the other hand, claiming ancient Egyptians called their land Kemet as in land of “black” people is absolutely ridiculous since every Egyptologist, scholar or any modern Egyptian would tell you that the name derives from the fertile soil that is left over when the Nile flood recedes in August and no, it is NOT a description of ethnicity.
Colours are commonly associated with different meanings in cultures around the world, these associations can vary greatly. Red for instance, is a very powerful colour in the Indian culture and holds many important meanings. Among them are fear and fire.
The colour black represents fertile soil, death and the afterlife to the ancient and modern Egyptians. Osiris was given the epithet “the black one” because he was the king of the underwold, and both he and Anubis (god of embalming) were portrayed with black faces.
Queen Nefertari is often depicted with black skin. While Afrocentrics argue that this is proof she was of Nubian descent (which could be possible) it is equally likely that it was symbolic of the fact that she was the patroness of the necropolis and was one of the few people to be defied. Furthermore, Queen Nefertari was portrayed with Light skin as well as shown below.
Ancient Egyptian artists distinguished themselves from Nubians, Westerners (Libyans) and Gods in great detail and thanks to their diligence, it’s pretty obvious that ancient Egyptians were of many skin tones including black, just as they are today.
There is no reason nor is there any scientific evidence to believe that the ancestors of the Egyptian population emerged and evolved outside of northeast Africa. Moreover, genetic tests prove that modern Egyptians have a strong connection with the diversity of ancient populations that would have been indigenous to northeastern Africa and subject to the range of evolutionary influences over time. In short there is no evidence that ancinet Egyptians were only black. This can be seen quite clearly in the many statues and paintings from the time.
Ancient Egyptians
Modern Egyptians
Oh! And in regards of “Egypt is not African”...
Egypt is a member state of the African Union. Egypt is a Nile-Land. The Nile is an African river. Egypt is a Saharan country. The Sahara is an African desert.
Therefore, Egypt is in Africa.
Egyptians were never “replaced” by Arabs. Although Egyptian culture today is predominantly Arab, but genetics, as well as cultural identity, show that modern Egyptians are the descendants of Ancient Egyptians.
Stop applying modern (racist) North American categories like ”black” and “white” because this did not apply to Egyptians back then.
Yours truly,
an annoyed Egyptian.
